The Bolivar trademark was introduced to the world market in 1901, with the name the great liberator of South America Simon Bolivar, the celebrated Venezuelan fighter who decolonized all or part of modern Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. The brand was founded by José F. Rocha though the brand was not registered in Havana (Cuba) until 1921, under the ownership of Rocha's firm, J.F. Rocha y Cia. The Rocha company in Havana, Cuba commemorated Bolivar by attributing this name a new brand of Havana cigars, and promoting his portrait on the label and cigar box.

After Rocha's death, the brand was bought in 1954 by Cifuentes y Cia and production was moved to the famous Partágas Factory in Havana, known as the Francisco Pérez Germán factory, where many of its sizes are still produced today. under Cifuente's direction, Bolívar gained popularity in the world market and became a major export brand.

Cuban Bolivar cigars are made with a higher proportion of seco and ligero leaves, which gives them their robustness and unique, powerful taste.Well-known for their very spicy qualities, the flavor profile also features with dark roasted flavors of nuts, coffee over deep earthy undertones. With more recent productions, the flavors have been more balanced. Very smooth, Bolivar cigars tend to emit lots of velvety smoke and strong aromas.
