In 1492, Columbus visited the island if Cuba, and found out that island natives were the first who developed Tobacco culture. The Cuba natives used the word "Cohiba" for the name of a bunch of dried leaves, and the word "Tobacco" for the smoking pipe. It is believed that by the Columbus return back to Spain, he mixed the two words. Columbus called the sample of dried leaves as "Tobacco". Thus we can truly say Cohiba, true to its brand, is "Tobacco", literally.
The first appearance on the market of The Cohiba cigar marked in the early 80's. Only in 1982 with the cooperation of the World Cup, Fidel Castro made this premium cigars publicly recognized. The first production of Cohiba brand started in 1982 with the three vitolas or sizes: the Lancero, the Panetela, and the Corona Especial. Later , in 1989 three more vitolas or sizes were added: the Esplendido, the Robusto and the Exquisito. The six first sizes during the time acquired the name Linea Clasica.
To commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Colombus' discovery of the New World, Habanos SA introduced the Linea 1492 In 1992 under the Cohiba name.
