A few facts about tobacco taxes and prevention programs

Children under 18 illegally bought 15 million packs of cigarettes last year, according to a study by the American Journal for Public Health.
Wisconsin collects a 59-cent tax on each pack of cigarettes purchased in the state. The Legislative Fiscal Bureau estimates the state collected $253 million in tax revenue from cigarette sales in the fiscal year that ended July 1. Children under 18 illegally bought 15 million packs of cigarettes last year, according to a study by the American Journal for Public Health. Based on the American Journal study, the state collects $9 million a year in tax revenue from the illegal sale of cigarettes to children. The state spent $1 million last year on tobacco prevention programs, including billboards and television and radio commercials. The two-year-old program targets 11- to 14-year-old girls.
