Farmers in N.C. to get federal Floyd aid

12/30/99
North Carolina farmers are expected to get $110 million in government payments to help compensate for losses stemming from Hurricane Floyd and declining demand for cigarettes.
A total of $328 million in payments to U.S. tobacco growers will begin within the next few weeks and will be made either by the U.S. Agriculture Department or by the states, said department spokesman Steve Thompson. The aid is part of the $8.7 billion federal financial bailout for farmers enacted in October to compensate for low crop prices and natural disasters.
